Bloom Plus BP 4000 Full Spectrum LED Grow Light VS King Plus UL Series 400W LED Quantum Board

From Arctic greenhouses and urban gardens to legalized farms, the lights we use for growing plants indoors have sprouted into a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Closer to home, on our windowsills and coffee tables, we’re becoming ever more fascinated with our leafy ficus, stoic cacti and aromatic oregano friends.

“We know from research that keeping indoor plants has many benefits, such as reduced anxiety and stress, improved productivity and focus, and even improved healing,” says Leslie F. Halleck, an author and certified professional horticulturist.

“So in terms of wellness, bringing some nature indoors can have a very positive impact on our lives. Beyond the mental benefits, plants bring so much dimension, aesthetically, to our homes and offices. Plants literally bring our indoor spaces to life.”

It turns out some of those plants would also love a LED grow light, at least for part of the year.

How to Use Grow Lights

Use grow lights to help your indoor plants grow quicker and healthier.

Choose your equipment. Select the style of light you think will work best for your houseplants or herb garden. Fluorescent and HID grow lights often require ballasts to regulate electrical outputs. Full-spectrum grow lights are a good option for most indoor plants. If you have several houseplants, consider using a larger grow lamp, a panel of lights, or a reflector for supplemental light to reach the bottom of leaves.

Set up your lights. The ideal lighting levels depend on the types of plants you have in your indoor garden. Although some plants thrive in low-light conditions, most require bright light — particularly succulents and flowering plants.

Monitor the temperature from your lights. Depending on the wattage of your light sources, grow lights can burn houseplants. Place incandescent lights at least two feet away from your plants. Keep fluorescent and HID grow lights at least twelve inches away from plants. With a low heat output, LED grow lights can typically get as close as six inches to houseplants without harming them.

Install a timer. Constant light output prevents plants from experiencing a normal light-dark cycle and ultimately harms them. Use a timer to regulate the amount of light your houseplants receive from your grow lights. Make sure your plants get between eight to sixteen hours of light and at least eight hours of darkness.

What to look for in grow lights for indoor plants

When I first started researching different types of grow lights, my head spun! I wasn’t familiar with many of the terms used and thought I was decoding a secret language. Here are a few terms you might run into when shopping for the best grow lights:

Size

The dimension of the grow lamp is definitely one of the most important things you need to pay attention to.

Therefore, depending on the size of your Monstera or the expected size when it starts to grow if you are raising it from the seeding stage you should pay attention to the size of the growing light you are purchasing.

This is one of the first things you should take into consideration before buying a grow lamp for your plant.

Full-spectrum
In grow-light marketing terms, “full-spectrum” means the light can reproduce the effects of sunlight on plants. For indoor plants, using a “full-spectrum” light is a must and full-spectrum LED lights are, in my opinion, the best.

Heat sink
A heat sink is a part of a light fixture (most often found in LED lights) that increases the heat flow away from the hot light. While not necessary, a heat sink is an important feature that will prevent too much heat from being cast onto your plants causing them to dry out faster. A heat sink also improves a grow light’s longevity.

K-value
For lighting purposes, the K (Kelvin) value is the scientific measure of the color of light. Values over 5000 are white and higher numbers even give off a blue tint. 4000K is more of a neutral off-white, and lower numbers in the 3000K range are tinted yellow/brown. In terms of growing indoor plants, grow lights that are similar to natural sunlight (something in the 6000K range) are best.

Conclusion

After reading our list of grow lights and their reviews I hope that some of the material that we have prepared for you helped you decide what the best choice is for your plant.

Good luck gardeners!
